From Effort To Effortlessness

I recently mentioned in a class that we should especially practice the asanas (postures) we dislike - or even fear - until we can tolerate them, maybe even like them - and one day, anticipate them. But why does our attitude change over time?

One reason might be this: with consistent practice, we shift from effort to effortlessness. The thing that once felt hard becomes easy - so natural, in fact, that we forget we ever struggled with it in the first place. The same we can transfer into daily life. But what if we worked on our mindset from the very beginning?

Disliking or fearing something takes energy.

A lot of it.Just the effort of resisting can take up so much space that the task itself feels heavier than it really is.

Our mindset colors the whole experience.

But when we meet the present moment as it is, something softens.

We feel a bit lighter.

And from there, effortlessness can begin to enter every aspect of our being - until it feels like the most natural thing in the world.

Because somehow, it is.

This is at the heart of the Yoga Sūtras, especially chapter one

(1.12) To practice with dispassion - or better yet, with the right kind of passion.

Not with craving or aversion, but simply for the sake of exploration. Not impatiently waiting for a result - because the moment we start waiting, we miss what’s already here.

This doesn’t mean denying the mind’s longings, but rather not being blindly led by them.

To acknowledge the ongoing battle between like and dislike, have a good laugh - and choose, again and again, to return to the abundance of now.

Until even that remembrance becomes effortless.
